Ethics: The Drama of the Moral Life. Piotr Jaroszynski and Mathew Anderson (Paperback - Sep 2003). Recommended be our chaplain, Fr. Beaulieu. An excellent introduction, brief (only 145 pages) yet profound. This will help put medical ethics in the larger context of the moral life.

Good News about Sex and Marriage: Answers to Your Honest Questions about Catholic Teaching. Christopher West. Servant Books, 2004. Solid, orthodox answers to questions from a great teacher. West has taken “Theology of the Body” and written a really useful book for all of us.

The Healer’s Calling. Daniel P. Sulmasy, M.D., O.F.M. Paulist Press, 1997. Franciscan friar and practicing physician, Sulmasy speaks with eloquence about the vocation of medicine. Feeling a little stale? Pick up this book and recharge your batteries!

Life Isssues, Medical Choices: Questions and Answers for Catholics. Janet Smith and Chris Kaczor. Servant Books, 2007. Quick, orthodox and understandable answers to 57 questions of medical ethics. Great resource to copy and provide explanations for patients.

Diamond, M.D., who is Professor of Pediatrics and Past Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. Practice by the Book: A Christian Doctor’s Guide to Living and Serving. Gene Rudd, M.D. and Al Weir, M.D. Christian Medical Association, 2005. Written from an Evangelical Protestant perspective, but still excellent. Deals with the integration of faith and medicine in practical and profound ways.

Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To. Anthony DeStefano. Doubleday, 2007. Written from a Catholic perspective. Words of encouragement for patients or yourself when dealing with such universal problems as suffering, guilt, fear, stress, and depression.

Urged on By Christ: Catholic Health Care in Tension with Contemporary Culture. Proceedings from the National Catholic Bioethics Center 2007 Workshop for Bishops. This is the latest information on the ethics of such issues as reproductive technology, embryo adoption, artificial hydration and nutrition.
