AUGUST, 2010
"Have
courage. Trust in God. Speak up and defend your
Catholic faith with your medical colleagues.
Commit yourself to good and moral medicine. Get
involved and fight hard for the conscience rights
of your fellow Catholics and their institutions.
Remember the Hippocratic Oath. Dedicate
yourselves again to being truly Christian and
deeply Catholic health-care professionals. You
and I and all of us – we’re disciples first.
That’s why you gave your heart and all your
talent to this extraordinary vocation in the
first place. Remember that as you go home today.
Use up your lives for the glory of God and the
dignity of your patients. You walk in the
footsteps of the Healer of humanity and Redeemer
of history. In healing the sick, proclaim his
Kingdom with the witness of your lives."
Archbishop Charles Chaput, from an address given
March 2, 2010 entitled: "Health-care reform and the
future of the Catholic health-care
vocation."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: On the Health-Care Vocation
ON BEING A 'PROFESSIONAL'
What does it mean to be a medical professional? The word is derived from the Latin professus, meaning "to have publicly declared". A professional is traditionally understood as one who has publicly professed adherence to a code of ethics or values. For physicians, to be a professional was traditionally to be one who has professed the Hippocratic Oath. More on being a professional.

Did you know that Worcester now has a Catholic
home for pregnant women in crisis? Please
consider adding them to your regular charitable
giving. It's a great cause--close to home!

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK
Each time a Christian falls seriously ill, he may receive the Anointing of the Sick, and also when, after he has received it, the illness worsens. (Catechism, 1529)As physicians we
are in a
unique place to encourage this wonderful
Sacrament.
PRAY IN, PRAY OUT:
When seeing patients we have all gotten in the habit of "foam in, foam out." As Catholic physicians, as we disinfect our hands, let us also get in the habit of "pray in, pray out." It is a simple way to bring Christ to the bedside.
RECENT MEETINGS:
Monday, July 26, 7-8pm: "Abortion in the Diocese of Worcester"
